Jan van Eyck (c. 1390 – 1441) can undoubtedly be called a pioneer. With his brushstroke and translucent oil painting technique, he was innovative and achieved breathtakingly good results. The realism of his works, the sense of detail, the perfection of the compositions and the mastery of colors amaze the world. He was also one of the first artists to add a signature to his paintings, which was very unusual at the time. Only a few dozen of his paintings are known to have survived. Eyck’s two works have been used in the design of the coin card – the artist’s supposed self-portraits “The Man in the Red Turban” on the front and a fragment from the altarpiece “The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb” on the back.
