Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (March 5, 1696 – March 27, 1770), was an Italian painter and printmaker from the Republic of Venice who painted in the Rococo style, considered important member of the 18th-century Venetian school. He was prolific, and worked not only in Italy, but also in Germany and Spain. The obverse of the 2-euro coin, depicts the moment when the angel sent by God rescues Hagar and Ishmael who had lost their way in the desert, pointing to a spring of water.
The detail is taken from the painting “Hagar and Ishmael”, one of Tiepolo’s absolute masterpieces and is kept at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, an important Venetian brotherhood.
