2€ commemorative coin Lithuania 2019 – Sutartinės, Lithuanian multipart songs
Sutartines is a type of old Lithuanian folk polyphonic songs, mainly female labor. Performed during work, as well as at weddings; sometimes accompanied by dancing.
In 2010, the sutartines entered the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The oldest sutartines were epic in character, the later ones were more lyrical. The execution of sutartines was observed only in the eastern and northeastern regions of Lithuania. Sutartines are distinguished from ancient Lithuanian folk songs by a peculiar polyphonic warehouse, features of the musical structure, as well as melody and rhythm. A living tradition until the middle of the 20th century was preserved in Aukstaitija (northeastern Lithuania).
