The maple is an endless source of beauty throughout the year. People most readily associate it with the breathtaking crimson and gold hues of autumn, but those with an observant eye will also recall the clusters of tiny flowers that burst forth with vibrant freshness every spring and early summer—and carpet roads and driveways with drifting yellows and greens as blossoms fall to the ground.

As summer progresses, seeds will form where female flowers once were; winged samaras rotating like tiny propellers as they drift to the ground or when playful hands toss them into the air.

The maple is dynamic; always in perfect harmony with the rhythm of nature. Sun, snow and fertile earth are its inspiration, the life force that creates a world of majesty and beauty through the power of a single water droplet.

It was the sensational story of its time, one that still captivates the imagination 170 years later. Under Sir John Franklin's command, two Royal Navy ships set sail with every expectation of success in May of 1845 to chart the last unknown part of the Northwest Passage—yet they never returned. Subsequent expeditions who searched for the missing ships uncovered stories and relics; then, in September 2014 came news that stunned the world: Canada's Victoria Strait Expedition had discovered the wreck of H.M.S. Erebus, Franklin's flagship, lying on the Arctic seabed. This scientific breakthrough raises the possibility that new evidence could help solve some of the lingering mysteries surrounding the lost expedition and its final days, for what really happened to the Franklin expedition? In its Lost Ships in Canadian Waters series, the Royal Canadian Mint commemorates this famously ill-fated voyage with a coin that depicts Franklin's ships before they were lost to the ice and cold waters of the Canadian North.

The German artist Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was a great painter, but also an important engraver. One of his most famous works is the “Rhinoceros“ woodcut. Dürer used an Indian rhinoceros, which the Portuguese King Manuel I. received in 1515 as a gift from India, as his subject. This living Rhino caused a tremendous stir in the Court of Lisbon and far beyond. The exotic animal’s description, along with a rough sketch, reached Nuremberg by mail, and there it inspired Albrecht Dürer for his work – it should be noted that he had never seen such an animal himself.

The Glasswinged butterfly (Greta oto) is a brush-footed butterfly, and is a member of the subfamily Danainae, tribe Ithomiini, subtribe Godyridina. G. oto adults also exhibit a number of interesting behaviors, such as long migrations and lekking among males.

Greta Oto
The Glasswinged Butterfly (Greta oto) is one of the most spectacular butterflies on the planet. This isn’t because of its bright coloration or unique shape, however, but rather its one glaring and fabulous characteristic: its wings are almost completely transparent!

Most butterflies have very tiny scales which cover the wing membranes. These scales are what give monarch butterflies their orange and black hues or morpho butterflies their vivid blue coloring. Unlike these butterflies, between the veins of the Glasswinged Butterfly there are no scales – just translucent membranes – which means the wings allow you to look straight through them! That’s why the Spanish name for these butterflies is ‘espejitos’ which literally translates to ‘little mirrors.’

The membranes, when positioned in just the right way, will refract light so that incredible, breathtaking colors are shown in the butterfly’s wings. It’s akin to a clear soap bubble catching the light and exposing its vast array of colors within. When in flight, however, it’s nearly impossible to spot the butterfly since its wings are basically clear.

It’s a very neat trick to avoid being eaten – don’t be seen at all! What does this butterfly do when its a caterpillar, though? Well, the larvae are brightly colored purple and red which equals a big “stay away from me” in the animal kingdom. If predators still go after the caterpillar, they’re in for a terrible surprise. Caterpillars of the Glasswinged Butterfly will actually feed on a plant of the genus ‘Cestrum.’ The common name for this plant is nightsha... and it’s highly poisonous. The caterpillars absorb the toxins into their bodies from the plant and these will even materialize into the adult’s body after the caterpillars undergo metamorphosis. So, both the caterpillar and the adult are poisonous and any predator would do best to avoid munching on them.

On his departure he left a pewter plate inscribed with a record of his visit, nailed to a post in a rock cleft on the northernmost end of the cape, now known as the Cape Inscription Area. Illusioon? - Mõnikord me vaevalt suudame uskuda oma silmi. Meie silmad on tegelikult võimelised võtma pildi omaks nii kiiresti, kui välk. Kuid mõnikord see esmane mulje on väga segane. Siis pead vaatama kaks korda ja tüve meie silmades veel. Me peame kõigepealt vaimselt seedima, mida nägime - eksprompt. Ainult teise pilguga me mõistame, et pilt koosneb erinevatest kihtidest ja üksikasjadest.
Šveitsi kunstnik Sandro del Prete (* 1931) meistril on optiline illusioonist joonistus stiil, mida ta nimetatakse "Illusorismuseks". Üks tema mõistatuslike piltide tegelasi on Don Quijote kuulsast romaanist Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616).

This stunning coin captures the sparkle and allure of one of nature’s most transient beauties, freezing it in time for you to enjoy all year round.
Coin designs: Delicate snowflakes reveal the infinite diversity of crystalline sculptures that fill the air during a snowfall.
Packaging:Coin is encapsulated and presented in a maroon clamshell case lined with flock and protected by a black sleeve.
What’s your winter passion—snowstorm or light flurries?
Anticipation builds as the sky turns grey—and finally releases the season’s first snowfall. A cascade of crystalline stars drifts down to earth in the hush of winter’s still crisp air; it will take a million of them to cover 60 square centimetres of ground with 25 cm of snow.

Children eagerly transform snowflakes into snowmen, forts and snowballs while cameras focus on their breathtaking shapes and scientists study their formation and how they influence everyday life in Canada.

Snowflakes are born high in the atmosphere. They start out as tiny molecules of water vapour that freeze around particles in the air. As they fall, they stick to each other and grow larger, shaped by the wind, moisture and temperature. Each snowflake follows a different path and is affected by the elements in different ways. As a result, no two snowflakes are exactly alike—each one boasts a beauty and design all its own.

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (6 March 1475 – 18 February 1564) was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of the High Renaissance who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art. Considered to be the greatest living artist during his lifetime, he has since been described as one of the greatest artists of all time. Despite making few forays beyond the arts, his versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man, along with his rival and fellow Florentine Medici client, Leonardo da Vinci.
He sculpted two of his best-known works, the Pietà and David, before the age of thirty. At the age of 74, he succeeded Antonio da Sangallo the Younger as the architect of St. Peter's Basilica. Michelangelo transformed the plan so that the western end was finished to his design, as was the dome, with some modification, after his death.

Architect and designer Eileen Gray (1878–1976). Born in Enniscorthy, the second-largest town in County Wexford, Ireland, Gray is considered by many in the world of art as a true visionary. She lived the majority of her life in France and became a preeminent figure within the Modernist art movement, in which she was initially acclaimed for her work with lacquer. Her notable later works include E.1027, a modernist villa she designed and built from 1926 to 1929 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France. Her futuristic armchair “Fauteuil aux dragons,” a design structured out of wood and containing two dragon’s heads carved in the armrests, sold at auction in 2009 for an astounding €22 million. Gray’s designs were often praised for their functionality in addition to their aesthetic form. She lived to see a resurgence of interest in her work in the 1970s, and her famous “Brick Screen” has become an icon of modernist design..

Aporia Crataegi
Aporia crataegi, the black-veined white, is a large butterfly of the family Pieridae. It occurs in orchards and thickets throughout most of Europe, temperate Asia, Korea, and Japan. It is normally found at altitudes of 500 to 2.000 metres. The flight period of the black-veined white is between April and July. The adults are quite social and their abundance varies greatly from year to year. The eggs are laid on the food plant, usually a member of the rose family Rosaceae and often on trees in the genus Prunus such as the rowan or the bird cherry (Prunus padus), the hawthorns (Crataegus species) or the apple (Malus domestica). The eggs are yellow at first, darkening with age, and are laid in groups of 30 to 100. They take about three weeks to hatch. The caterpillars are greenish grey with transverse banding and tend to remain in a group with a communal larval web. The caterpillars overwinter communally in a webbing tent with entwined leaves. Caterpillars feed close together on the leaves of the food plant at first, before dispersing in the later developmental stages to other parts of the tree. The pupa is creamy white, marked with black, attached by a silken girdle to a twig. The pupal stage lasts about three weeks.

The butterfly species Cymothoe hobarti is indigenous to the tropical forests of Tanzania and neighbouring countries such as Uganda, Kenya and Congo. Just like in previous years, this series, which is sold out annually, presents itself with a new country of issue.

The butterfly’s remarkable red colouring is a wonderful addition to the collection and the glimmer effect on its body shows an attractive feature. The flower is deliberately kept in subdued colours to let the extraordinary smartminting high relief take the stage.

In the novel Wells gives only a rough description of the ship, describing her thus: “About a couple of miles out lay an ironclad, very low in the water, almost, to my brother's perception, like a water-logged ship. This was the ram Thunder Child.” A few paragraphs later, it is said that "It was the torpedo ram, Thunder Child, steaming headlong, coming to the rescue of the threatened shipping".

In Jeff Wayne's musical adaptation, the ship is described as an ironclad but not specifically a ram or a torpedo ram; the album cover art illustration of Thunder Child is of a pre-dreadnought battleship such as the Canopus-class in combat with a Martian tripod. The ship is also depicted in art in the Classics Illustrated comic book adaptation of the novel, also appearing as a typical pre-dreadnought battleship of the era. The real torpedo ram Polyphemus was fast, heavily armoured for her size, and capable of operating in shallow coastal waters; her hull was low in the water with a raft-like superstructure mounting six 1-inch Nordenfelt guns, again very much unlike a pre-dreadnought battleship.

The Mary Celeste was a British-American merchant brigantine famous for having been discovered on December 4, 1872 in the Atlantic Ocean, unmanned and apparently abandoned. Thus was born one of the most durable mysteries in nautical history: What happened to the ten people who had sailed aboard the Mary Celeste? Through the decades, a lack of hard facts has only spurred speculation as to what might have taken place. Theories have ranged from mutiny to pirates to sea monsters to killer waterspouts. Austraalia Känguru
Maailma suurim kukkurloom on esimene sümbol, mis enamikele Austraalia loomariigiga seostub.
Kängurusid on Austraalias palju erinevaid liike ja nad esinevad erinevates suurustes. Kängurud ei jookse, vaid hüppavad. Neil on suured tagajäsemed ja tasakaalu hoiavad nad suure sabaga. Tugevate tagajalgadega 3-4 meetriseid hüppeid tehes võib ta saavutada kiiruse 40-50 km/h.
Vaatama sellele, et igal aastal antakse luba miljonite kängurute küttimiseks, ületab nende arv Austraalias inimeste arvu enam kui kahekordselt (ca 40 miljonit kängurut).

Maple leaves lush and green.
The Pacific Coast is home to one of Canada’s largest and fastest-growing maple species. Its name, Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum Pursh) is most appropriate; its massive, five-lobed leaves can measure a full 30 cm (1 ft) across—and when these lush green specimens are joined by epiphytic moss and ferns growing on the branches, this tree’s majestic silhouette becomes irresistibly enchanting.

First Nations people have long cherished the Bigleaf Maple for its close-grained hardwood, savoury sap and sweet flowers. These tiny yellow-green blossoms appear on the tree’s twig-ends in early spring and are relished by deer and other animals. Soon after, the flowers turn to fruit—winged seeds that are known as samaras.

Amur Leopard or Panthera Pardus Orientalis
The leopard is rarely found in cold or high-elevation environments and is best known in its more familiar home in the savannas of Africa, where populations are relatively stable.
However, in the northernmost part of its range, a rare subspecies of this cat lives in the temperate forests and harsh winters of the Russian Far East. This is the Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis). It is also known as the Far East leopard, the Manchurian leopard or the Korean leopard.
The Amur leopard has some very distinguishing features. The hairs of its summer pelt are 2.5 cm long but in winter they are replaced by 7 cm long ones.
Apart from its long winter coat, which is a light colour in the winter, and more reddish-yellow in the summer, the Amur leopard is easily told apart from other leopard subspecies by its widely spaced rosettes with thick borders. It also has longer legs, probably an adaptation for walking through snow.
